Dan Gernux

Dan Gernux was a police officer for 12 1/2 years with San Bernardino Police Department. I started working for DMV as an Investigator in May of 1995. My primary job was handling complaints against dealers from customers. As soon as I started working for DMV, I started researching the Penal Code, Vehicle Code, California Code of Regulation, and Civil Code so I could be familiar with what dealers could do and not due.

I was so thorough in my research that I was picked to teach the Investigations portion of the original Dealer's Class that was taught by DMV personnel. When I taught the class I would also give the dealer's information on how to stay out of trouble with DMV Investigations and reduce consumer complaints against them.

Prior to my retirement, due to a disability, in 2006, I handled several thousand complaints against dealers and took the appropriate action. This would include anything from a verbal warning up to and including criminal and administrative action against the dealer's license. I was a firm believer of the departments "progressive discipline".

I would also go to dealers and give them a "refresher" course to help them minimize complaints from consumers.

Six months prior to my retirement I was assigned to desk duty only and I became the Complaint Intake Investigator. When complaints came in against dealers, I would contact the dealer, explain the complaint and violation or violations, and would try to get the complaint resolved prior to being assigned to a field investigator.
